About University of Virginia
Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University of Virginia has consistently been ranked among the best public schools in the country, and is continually ranked among the top 25 universities in the country. Located in Charlottesville, the University of Virginia is set in one of the most scenic areas of the state. Charlottesville is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers students, visitors, and residents a wealth of activities year-round.
Visitors to Charlottesville can immerse themselves in history with many historical sites located nearby. A few of the more popular sites include the historic Michie Tavern, which has been in business since 1784, Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.
For those that love the great outdoors, there are plenty of scenic spots to explore. Located just west of Charlottesville is Skyline Drive, which is considered to be one of the most scenic routes in the country. A leisurely drive down this stretch of road will take you past mountain summits, waterfalls, and often provides the opportunity to see wild turkeys, foxes and bald eagles. Also nearby, you can pick up the Appalachian Trail, which runs from Georgia to Maine. In the winter, skiing is a very popular pastime and there are several ski resorts located nearby.
